In a recent statement on X, formerly Twitter, Prof. Maurice Kamto, the President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), has called on his followers to actively participate in the electoral process by enrolling massively in the electoral register.
The CRM (MRC) leader categorically stated that Cameroon will not experience any meaningful change if citizens fail to take action.
“You must act by carrying your actions into your prayers. If you don’t register to vote and vote, prayer won’t register for you, won’t vote for you,” Kamto said.
Kamto further invoked an adage, emphasising the importance of self-help, saying, “And you won’t achieve the change you so desire. Help yourself, and heaven will help you.”
As Cameroon approaches the 2025 election year, Kamto is urging his supporters to take practical steps towards bringing about change.
Despite his intentions to run for the presidency in 2025, concerns have been raised regarding the constitutionality of his candidature. Critics point to an article in the electoral code stipulating that a party must have representation in parliament for its candidate to run for president. Currently, the CRM Party lacks representation in parliament and holds no positions in any council.
During the 2020 municipal and parliamentary elections, CRM opted to boycott, citing the ongoing anglophone crisis and advocating for changes in electoral laws. However, the desired modifications have not been implemented as Kamto prepares for the 2025 elections.
In an attempt to position himself as the leader of the yet-to-be-formed opposition coalition, Kamto faces scepticism from other parties, including the Social Democratic Front and Cabral Libii. The dynamics of the opposition landscape remain uncertain as the political scenario unfolds.
