The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof Nalova Lyonga, launched the 2025/2026 school year today, August 19, with a renewed focus on student safety and health, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the teaching and learning process.

The launch took place during an enlarged pedagogic meeting that brought together key stakeholders in the secondary education sector.

The gathering, held in Yaounde, included Inspectors, Regional Delegates, Directors, Principals, teachers, partners, and other actors within the secondary education community.

This comes at a time where the educational system in the North West and southwest region of Cameroon has been threatened since 2016.

According to UNICEF data released this month, 40 percent of schools were still closed in the Anglophone regions as of March 2025, due to the crisis.

The new school year is starting on a revolutionary path, with the emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, which is a novelty in the secondary school milieu in Cameroon.

AI has the potential of bridging inequalities in access to knowledge, according to UNESCO, and can innovate teaching and learning practices, and accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals.
