The case of the deceased Buea-based journalist who died while in detention in Yaounde seems to have gone under the radar, but an organisation for defending journalists around the world has urged the United Nations to demand answers from the Cameroonian authorities on the death of Buea based pidgin newscaster, Samuel Abuwe Wazizi.
They have demanded for the culprits to be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the acceptable international standards.
In a communiqué published on August 10 by Reporters Without Borders, RSF, they asked that full light into extrajudicial killings, torture and the lack of freedom of expression in the Republic of Cameroon be looked into.
The case of Wazizi according to RSF is one case too many and has to be the last of its kind ever in any democratic society thus they want the president of the Republic to stay true to his word as he had promised through the French ambassador to Cameroon to look into the situation.
“Two months after the revelation of this affair, the independent and transparent investigation promised by the President of the Republic H.E. Paul Biya has still not seen the light of the day. The Government’s official statement is riddled with inconsistencies and we fear that the promised investigation may lead to the manifestation of the truth. We call on the United Nations to do everything in their power to ensure that the circumstances that caused Samuel Wazizi’s death are established,” said Paul Coppin, the Legal Officer of RSF.
