The Social Democratic Front (SDF) has strongly condemned what it terms the unlawful demolition of its Centre Regional headquarters in the Oledzoa neighborhood of Yaoundé. The incident occurred early Wednesday, June 18, reportedly on the orders of a senior official of the National Gendarmerie.
In a public statement released hours after the incident, the opposition party described the demolition as “outrageous” and a “clear sign of the regime’s growing anxiety” ahead of the 2025 presidential election.
“This act of political intimidation is a serious violation of the civil and political freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution,” the SDF stated. “It reflects the regime’s increasing unease in the face of the rising momentum of the democratic opposition.”
No Notice or Legal Warrant Presented
Eyewitnesses in the Oledzoa area reported the presence of armed gendarmes and heavy machinery used to demolish the structure. SDF officials stated that no legal documents or prior notifications accompanied the destruction of the building.
The party has described the action as a calculated attempt to suppress political opposition during a critical electoral period.
“We wish to reassure our militants, sympathizers, and all citizens committed to justice: the SDF remains steadfast, mobilised, and more determined than ever to pursue the path toward democratic change and victory in 2025,” the party added.

Legal Action Initiated
The SDF’s legal team has further initiated investigations to establish the circumstances of the demolition, identify those responsible, and pursue appropriate legal measures.
Meanwhile, as of this publication, no official statement has been issued by government authorities or security officials regarding the incident.

The demolition comes amid increased political tension in Cameroon, with opposition parties continuing to call for a level playing field ahead of the presidential election scheduled for later this year.
The Social Democratic Front, one of Cameroon’s longest-standing opposition parties, has appealed to both national and international observers to monitor the political climate and stand in solidarity with groups advocating for democratic governance and constitutional rights.
