Security forces free Hundreds of young people illegally arrested in Buea

There has been an outcry in Buea today following the arrest of several youth. Taken from different parts of the town early today, they were taken to the Checkpoint Stadium in Molyko.

Hours later, they have been released.
“After taking down our information, they made a video of us all and said we could return home” one of the students tells MMI.

“Here in Buea we are like foreigners. They enter our homes as they please and take us out. We don’t have a right in our own country… Some were even taken from their beds” he laments.

“They arrested me as I was on my way going to a friend’s place around 11 AM. I showed them my documents but they were not interested to know, they pick me up in their car and took me with others to the Molyko stadium” another attests.

“Later we were registered on some lists with our IDs and phone numbers. Then they took our pictures with the help of a metro”.

The process he adds was “characterized with insults and barbaric commands.”

“My worry is this, why were we registered in that manner and what it’s all about it?” He asks.

A constant practice for weeks now, authorities have remained mute over the indiscriminate arrests and profiling.

Buea, however, remains relatively peaceful as compared to other parts of the North West and South West regions that have been plunged into a four-year war.
