The Social Democratic Front party, SDF, will only have to contest the upcoming Senatorial Elections in the Northwest Region, after the elections management body, ELECAM, rejected its list of candidates for the Adamawa Region.
The information is contained in a February 7 list that ELECAM published, announcing the candidates who have been deemed qualified for the elections.
ELECAM also rejected all files submitted by the UPC, JDU and UCDI parties, flushing them completely out of the elections scheduled for March 12. This now limits to 10, the number of political parties who will participate in the election.
The rejected of SDF and UPC lists for the Adamawa Region leaves only the ruling CPDM party to contest in the region.
Explaining why SDF’s Adamawa list was rejected, ELECAM said it did not comply with the electoral code. One of the reasons advanced is that the party did not nominate a sufficient number (07) of candidates to run in the region.
ELECAM also said SDF did not provide required documents for some of its candidates, including certificates of nationality and birth certificates.
Meanwhile, Union des Populations du Cameroon (UPC) party had submitted lists of candidates in five Regions: Adamawa, Centre, Littoral, Northwest and West. But all these were rejected and the party now has no chance of participating in the elections.
In the Littoral Region, for example, ELECAM said UPC did not provide the sufficient number of candidates needed to run for the elections. Similar reasons were advanced for the rejection of JDU and UCDI parties.
As per requirements, each party is expected to submit a list of 14 candidates per Region – seven incumbent and seven incoming candidates.
It seems the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement party fulfilled all conditions. CPDM is the only party that will be running in all 10 Regions of the country, and none of its lists was rejected. The party will also monopolise elections in the Southwest and South regions, where it has no competitors.
Other political parties whose lists have been approved for the elections include PCRN, UNDP, UMS, ANDP, FDC, UDC, FSNC, and MDR. The will be contesting in the Adamawa, Littoral, East, Centre, North, Far North and West Regions.
