Senegal: President Macky Sall suspends internet connection to limit hate speech

In a move aimed at curbing the spread of hate speech, the President of Senegal has taken the decision to suspend the nation’s internet connection. This action is claimed to be part of a broader effort to maintain social harmony and prevent the dissemination of harmful content online.

By suspending internet access, authorities hope to restrict the circulation of inflammatory and divisive content that can fuel tensions within the country. While the move may be seen as a drastic measure, it underscores the seriousness with which the Senegalese government views the issue of hate speech.

Senegal’s Minister of Communication, Telecommunications, and the Digital Economy, Me Moussa Bocar Thiam, announced the suspension in a press release on Monday, July 31.

In the press release, he outlined their objective to combat the spread of “hateful and subversive content” on social media platforms, particularly in situations that pose a threat to public safety.

“the dissemination of hateful and subversive messages relayed on social networks in a context of threat to public order,” the release read in part.

The decision has been made as opposition leader, Ousmane Ousmane Sonko, prepares to make his appearance in court on Monday. A judge is set to determine the fate of the charges leveled against him during this appearance. The decision, which carries significant implications, will determine whether the charges will be accepted or dismissed. This crucial ruling is expected to shape the course of the case and potentially impact the future of all parties involved.

The declared candidate for the upcoming presidential election in Senegal finds himself embroiled in a controversy, as serious allegations of calling for insurrection and committing other crimes have been raised against him. The accusations, which have sent shockwaves through the political landscape, have cast a shadow of uncertainty over Ousmane Sonko’s campaign. Ousmane Sonko, stands accused of making inflammatory statements that allegedly incited insurrection and potentially violated other laws. These grave allegations have prompted widespread concern among citizens and political observers alike, as the country gears up for a crucial election that will shape its future.

Ousmane Sonko has urged his followers to take to social media and stage demonstrations as a means of resistance. This call to action was made on Sunday, signaling a potential escalation in the ongoing political conflict. Ousmane Sonko has made a public declaration regarding their intention to embark on a hunger strike.

In a series of unfortunate events that unfolded in June, a tragic loss of life occurred as clashes erupted in a show of support for Sonko, who had been handed a two-year prison sentence. At least 16 individuals tragically lost their lives during these violent confrontations.
