Separatists Claim Responsibility for Death of Gendarme Officer

Ambazonia separatist fighters have claimed responsibility for the killing of a Gendarme officer, Manga Betene Gael. On September 27, 2023, in Awing, a village located in the Santa Sub Division of the North West Region of Cameroon, a senior Gendarmerie officer was tragically killed. Separatist fighters have claimed responsibility for this unfortunate incident.

In a video making the rounds on social media, the separatist fighters under self-styled Gen. ‘The Only Bro.’ have claimed responsibility.

The fighters also said in the video that they also harvested a gun they described as a ‘chain cutter.’

The killing of the Gendarmerie official came at a time when military authorities had declared the area ‘Amba Free.’

Awing village is one of the most affected areas in the region in the context of the Anglophone Crisis.

“They have been lying low for some time now, making us think they have all left. They have just announced their presence, meaning they are still around. They are well armed this time around, more than they were before,” Chefor, a native of Awing, told MMI.

Another source told MMI that a combined force of Ambazonia separatists from Ngoketunjia and Awing carried out the attack.

The Anglophone Crisis, a bloody war, has continued to destroy lives and property in the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon. A recent report presented findings showing that both separatists and the Cameroon military have been complicit in the unprovoked killing of unarmed civilians.
