A release signed by the Secretary General at the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, has stated that several people have been arrested and many others wanted as investigations intensify to track down killers of journalist Martinez Zogo.
Although the names of the suspects have not been revealed, the communique released on February 2 notes that further investigations will determine their level of involvement in Zogo’s murder.
“Investigations carried so far have led to the arrest of several individuals highly suspected of being involved in this heinous crime. Others remain wanted,” the release partly reads.
Martinez Zogo, former managing director of Amplitude FM, a private radio station in Yaounde, was abducted on January 17 and his mutilated body was found on January 22, on the city’s outskirts.
Calls have been mounting on Cameroon’s government to investigate and arrest his killers and grant more protection to journalists.
On January 23, Communication Minister, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, affirmed government’s determination to bring the perpetrators to book.
In the recent communique signed by Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, President Paul Biya sympathised with the late journalist’s family, whose wife, Diane Zogo, had pleaded in a letter last week that the President should grant her family more protection.
Aside paying a “special tribute to the late journalist Martinez Zogo”, Biya lended his support to the journalism family.
Martinez Zogo is the latest of many journalists who have either been killed or detained unjustly in Cameroon in line with their job.
His death revived memories of Samuel Wazizi, a TV host in the country’s English-speaking town of Buea, who was detained by the police and later reporter to have died in detention.
Since 2020, the Government has not accounted for his death, despite having promised to investigate.
Also, his body was never handed to his family for burial.
