Many persons have lost their lives while several others remain missing following a Shipwreck which occured on June 7, 2022 in a water body in Nyong and Kelle, Makak Subdivision in the Centre Region.
According to reports, they were members of the same family who met their demise while crossing over from Malobo to Minka, aboard a makeshift canoe.
According to reports, these persons did not posses life jackets while embarking on the deadly journey.
Cabral Libi, national president of the PCRN (Cameroonian party for national reconciliation) confirmed the sad incident in a tweet which stated “Death has hit Nyong and Kelle hard again… Another Shipwreck occured on June 7, 2022 during the crossing of the Nyong at a place called Malobo, killing about 10 people.”
According to Esapa Esapa, Divisional Officer of Makak , 7 children were killed in the accident.
He went further to place the blame on human carelessness as he said ” we have tried as much as possible to educate and sensitize the population not to use the local canoes that they paddle with the hands, yet they don’t want to understand.”
The search for the remaining missing persons is however, still ongoing.
