Shatta Wale, the popular Ghanaian musician, faces detention in a tax investigation linked to his purchase of a luxury vehicle, his management confirmed on Wednesday.

US authorities seized Wale’s yellow Lamborghini earlier this month, alleging that the car connected to the proceeds of a criminal enterprise.

Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, denied any connection to the alleged criminal activity and described himself as a “third-party owner” of the $150,000 (£110,000) vehicle. He added that he did not know who had shipped the car to Ghana.

Management Clarifies Reason for Detention

In a statement shared on social media, Wale’s management emphasized that the musician’s detention was related to tax obligations rather than the US allegations.

He “presented himself voluntarily” to Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (Eoco) on Wednesday afternoon, the statement said.

The Eoco has not yet responded to requests for comment.

International Fraud Connection

Nana Kwabena Amuah, another Ghanaian, serves a seven-year prison sentence in the US for fraud, linking him to the Lamborghini investigation. Court records indicate that Amuah and his co-conspirators impersonated vendors to defraud nearly 70 public and private organisations.

Eoco has said the car will be returned to the US to assist in restitution for Amuah’s victims.

Management Appeals for Calm

Wale’s management urged fans to avoid speculation while the musician remains in detention:

“We want to assure all fans and the general public that his legal team is fully engaged and actively working with the authorities to resolve this matter.”

Broader Efforts Against International Fraud

The seizure of Wale’s Lamborghini forms part of a wider effort by Ghanaian authorities in collaboration with the US to dismantle an international fraud network targeting Americans. Earlier this month, the FBI and US Justice Department extradited and arrested three Ghanaian nationals alleged to be masterminds of a $100 million fraud scheme involving romance scams and phishing attacks.

Shatta Wale is one of Ghana’s best-known musicians, renowned for his work in dancehall. He gained international recognition through collaborations with artists including Beyoncé on the 2019 track Already.
