The association known as “Survie Cameroon Survival Initiative” (SCSI) is mobilising a team of lawyers this morning Tuesday May 12th 2020 to ensure the release of six volunteers of SCSI detained at the Mokolo police station in Yaounde.

According to Mbah Raoul, a militant of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party (CRM), the volunteers were arrested at the Mokolo Market on Monday May 11th 2020 for “distributing face masks and alcoholic based gel or sanitiser to the population without authorisation ”

Those arrested and detained include; Kouimo Jean Claude, Fodjo Noubissi Serge, Djieugoe Rodrigue, Massaugue Boyom Bibiane, Tientcheu Benoit and Tchopock Aime Raoul.

Mbah Raoul adds that, police men argued that Survie Cameroon Survival Initiative is an illegal association created by Professor Maurice Kamto, thus gifts from the association should not be distributed to the population.

Police arresting the volunteers for distributing face masks have sounded contradictory given that government has earlier issued a decision making the wearing of face masks compulsory to all in public places to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Most Cameroonians depend on volunteers who share face masks for free given that CICAM – a government owned textile company sells a face mask for 1300 fcfa, far above the reach of many Cameroonians.

Earlier on, Cameroon’s Ministry of public health rejected health and medical kits from SCSI on instructions from the Ministry of territorial administration and decentralisation.
