The Sasse Old Boys Association (SOBA) has officially laid the foundation stone for the construction of the SOBA Catholic University Institute of Sasse (SCUIS), marking a historic milestone in the evolution of the renowned St. Joseph’s College Sasse.

The ceremony, presided over by His Lordship Michael Bibi, Bishop of Buea and Proprietor of Schools in the Diocese, took place on Saturday, December 2024.

This was during celebrations to commemorate the institution’s 85th anniversary.

In his address, SOBA President, Ayuk Iyok, underscored the university’s mission to meet Cameroon’s growing demand for practical and technical education.

He emphasized on agriculture and technology, two pivotal sectors poised to drive national economic growth.

“Yes, we think that at 85, Sasse is ripe to move to the next level. A university is the logical next step after completing secondary and high school education. We identified a niche for a technical university that will focus on agriculture and technology,” he explained.

Ayuk Iyok further elaborated on the university’s goal of nurturing skilled professionals equipped to tackle the challenges of a rapidly evolving technological and competitive world.

“We realize that it’s increasingly difficult to find major electricians, hydraulic engineers, civil engineers, and electrical engineers within the country. This university aims to bridge that gap,” he stated.

While laying the foundation stone, Bishop Michael Bibi called for divine intervention to ensure the project is completed in record time.

He reassured SOBA of the diocese’s unwavering support for the initiative.

“Sasse is a precious jewel for us all. Protecting it and scaling up its initiatives is a collective responsibility. We shall support SOBA in every way possible to see this vision come to fruition,” he affirmed.

A Legacy of Excellence

Founded in 1939, St. Joseph’s College Sasse has established itself as one of Cameroon’s most prestigious secondary institutions.

Meanwhile, over its 85 years, it has produced distinguished leaders, professionals, and innovators across various fields.

The launch of Sasse Technical University represents a natural extension of this legacy, offering an opportunity to expand its impact into higher education.

The university’s focus on agriculture and technology aligns seamlessly with Cameroon’s developmental priorities.

“Agriculture remains the backbone of Cameroon’s economy, while technology is essential for modernization, innovation, and job creation. This university aims to empower young Cameroonians by bridging the skills gap in these critical sectors,” remarked Kebei Eugene, Secretary General of SOBA.

Transforming the Educational Landscape

The establishment of Sasse Technical University comes at a time when the demand for specialized technical skills in Cameroon is greater than ever.

Education experts point to a significant shortage of professionals in fields such as engineering, agricultural sciences, and technological innovation.

This university seeks to address that shortfall by offering programs tailored to meet both local and global economic demands.

The initiative has garnered widespread praise from educational stakeholders, alumni, and regional leaders who view it as a transformative step forward for Cameroon’s educational landscape.

“By laying the foundation for a university dedicated to technical education, SOBA is not only honoring the enduring legacy of their alma mater but also making a significant contribution to Cameroon’s socio-economic development,” noted the Mayor of Buea, David Namange Mafani.

Construction of the Sasse Technical University will begin shortly on a two-hectare plot of land adjacent to the college.

The project’s completion is eagerly anticipated as it promises to enhance opportunities for technical education and foster a new generation of skilled professionals.
