Soldiers stormed Alatening village in Santa Subdivision Monday, 01 June 2020, locals have said.
“They entered the village at about 6:30 p.m., harassed and threatened us with their guns. The soldiers came in from their camp in Mile 8 Junction Akum,” a villager told Mimi Mefo Info.
“They seized our phones and electronic gadgets. When they left, we found out that they had taken with them about 80 phones. They told us to come to their camp this morning and pay FCFA 20,000 each to retrieve out gadgets.”
A lady told MMI in tears that she was rough-handled by the soldiers before her phone was taken away from her.
“The way these soldiers are maltreating us, one is tempted to prefer the amba boys to the military. The military is performing very unpopular actions on the people they are called upon to protect,” she says.
The soldiers are said to have entered Alatening after receiving news that armed separatist fighters were hanging out at a popular bar in the village.
Some locals are of the opinion that this far, Alatening has not had any reason to want the military enter the village. “We need no protection from the military. We are fine and have no problem. The military is instead a problem to us,” some locals quipped.
