Soldiers resume scorch earth policy; burn, loot in Bafut

Soldiers have reportedly burnt down a house at Akofunguba village in Bafut, restive North West Region of Cameroon.
The armed-to-the-teeth soldiers also looted property from homes and provision stores, eyewitnesses have said.

Mimi Mefo Info recalls that earlier this month, soldiers raided the said village, with villagers taking to their heels for safety into nearby bushes, where some of them say they could spot the Cameroon military and the actions they were taking.

“My mom especially is very sick and weak after sleeping in the cold for three nights. She told us that from her hiding place, she saw the military visit our compound three times probably looking for food. A number of local provision stores were also vandalized and looted by the military,” narrated a native of the locality whose family home was burnt.

His parents have been rendered homeless after the burning and they are about 75-80 years old.

Bullet covers were seen on the floor of the burnt house, indicating the house was shot at before it got burnt, says an eyewitness who opted to conceal his identity.

The village of Akofunguba is presently inhabited by mostly very young children and old people, as the youthful and middle aged population are acquiring education or seeking for greener pastures out of the village.

Located in Bafut Subdivision, Akofunguba also shares border with villages in Momo Division of the Northwest region.
