Security forces in Buea are said to be carrying out raids in Ndongo, a locality close to the University of Buea.
The act which lasted a couple of hours happened in the morning hours of Monday, July 27th, a ghost town day.
“Police people mixed with gendarmes are currently arresting people including students,” a source says.
He explains further: “They removed us right from our hostels and demanded at least FCFA 1,000 for those who had ID cards and at least FCFA 5000 from those without”
“If you don’t give the money, they pack you in one of their vehicles and go with you to the station. I just gave them FCFA 1,000 now before they gave my ID card back to me,” the source adds.
Some students say the action adds salt to injury, given that the University of Buea started second semester examinations days back.
“They removed us from our room while we were studying, preparing for our exams,” a student laments.
Today’s arrests are not the first of their kind. Several areas in Buea have witnessed similar situations on Mondays including areas like Sandpit, Bomaka and Mile 16 weeks ago.
They give no explanation for the arrests.
