Rev Father Hyacinth Lormem Alia, a Catholic Priests has been elected governor of Benue state, in Nigeria.

He was declared winner by the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, following the March 18, 2023 gubernatorial election.

The Roman Catholic Priest who contested under the ticket of All Progressive Congress, APC, polled 473,933 votes ahead of his closest rival and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Titus Uba, who scored 223, 913.

Following his election win, he said: “I recognize what an enormous privilege and honor it is to be trusted with the government of the State especially at this time and am deeply conscious of it. I would like to say that God does not call the qualified! He qualifies the called.”

“I may not be the most qualified Benue son to lead the State at this time but the Good Lord who has called me will qualify me.” added Rev Hyacinth, governor-elect.

It should be recalled that, Rev Hyacinth Lormem Alia was suspended by catholic authorities in 2022 after he declared his ambitions to contest as Governor of Benue state.

In a suspension letter signed by William Avenya, Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Gboko & Apostolic Administrator, he said, “….the Mother Church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own.”
