Swiss Embassy Maintains Suspicious Silence Over Arrest Of Abdul Karim

Several days after the arrested and detention of activist, Abdul Karim, many are beginning to raise doubts as to the suspicious silence of the Swiss government. Picked up moments after leaving the Swiss Embassy in Cameroon, many would have expected the ambassador to issue a statement on his arrest.

The scholar had just returned from a conference in Switzerland and was returning from meeting with Switzerland’s ambassador to Cameroon when he was picked up by plainclothesmen believed to be security operatives, on September 25, 2019 in Yaounde.

Abdul Karim Ali believes only negotiations and mit dialogue will end the crisis

Coming on the eve of the much talked about Major National Dialogue, many say the arrest was motivated by his political stance on the crisis in the Anglophone regions of the country.

Not only has the Swiss government stayed silent about the arrest, the Swiss ambassador has since not replied to our questions, relating to the affair. In fact, he has made no remarks about the situation. Many are wondering if the silence of the Swiss government, speaks well of the country which has opted to mediate the Anglophone crisis.

Charged with secession and terrorism, Karim has become the latest of several others, who have been illegally arrested, detained and charged with crimes against the state.
