Greetings and happy Sunday to all the readers and followers of the Mimi Mefo platform.
Please keep my ID hidden for my safety. I want you to help and post this on your platform so the country, the continent, and the world at large can see what we are going through.
On Wednesday evening at about 5:45 pm, I left Mimboman in Yaounde 4 and headed to Oyomabang, Yaounde 7, to see my elder brother.
I was riding on my motorbike alone, with no luggage or passengers, when I was stopped at one small junction by men of the Yaounde 2 council.
I nearly knocked a guy down. My colleagues joined him and asked me to go down on my bike, which I did. In less than a minute, they took my bike to an unknown place.
After 3 minutes of the question-and-answer session, they demanded I give 10000 FCFA without asking for my documents. I told them to have just 1500 francs in my pocket. I explained to them that I am a student at the university and a teacher (PTA) in the Primary school; let them just take the 1500 francs and let me go.
No one spoke to me again. After some 10 minutes of silence, they asked me to climb on the bike and let’s go to what they called Fourier (Cou(the cil Chambers). With much shock, I could only see my bike already bundled and chained with other bikes there, and the amount needed from me was 25000 FCFA.
That was when I saw the sun at night instead of the moon and stars. It was already late in the night when I left the place, with warnings from one old father to only come back the next day with the said amount for signature and collection of my bike.
I did not have money with me, and I was also preparing to go and register for the 2023–2024 Academic year. The next morning, I called my brother, who lent me 15,000 francs and went straight to the Chambers, where they directed me to see the 1st Deputy Mayor.
While in his office, he was hospitable to welcome me and made me think things would be better on my side. Mimi, that man signed 20,000 francs on my Convocation paper and sent me out. I tried to beg him; he drove me as if I were a thief.
I struggled and paid the money, cursing it with all my heart. Please take what I say here and today, the Regime in place is nursing a generation of Thieves, Embezzlers, Scammers, corrupt people, and a generation of jealousy and hatred for one another.
Let Cameroonians tell me where all these sums of money go. Is this how to extort money from poor citizens who struggle to survive the turbulent, hardship that it has plunged them into? Does it imply that even if you are not a motorman, you must have a council plate when your bike’s documents are all there before you can use your bike to go see your relatives and carry on your activities?
Which government office operates at 5:00 p.m. in Cameroon? I think acquiring a bike will ease movement and reduce the rate of unemployment. I say this because what I saw is that a human mouth will not speak. Thousands of bikes are stocked at these councils all over Yaoundé. Let something be done to help poor Cameroonians who go through this mess.
To the powers that be: do something before it gets out of hand. Keeping silent doesn’t mean they are weak. I cursed these people who took my money because it’s not the first time they’ve taken 20,000Francs from me. They will suffer from that money.
