Thousands of youths have filled the streets of Bafoussam in the West region of Cameroon to welcome Prof Maurice Kamto.
The head of the opposition Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC party is in the town, to meet with some stakeholders in the political scene.
The visit is his first major political outing following supposed wrangling within the top ranks.
News reports had alleged that Prof Maurice Kamto was at loggerheads with ally, Barrister Michele Ndoki over leadership of the party.
His Bafoussam visit is therefore expected to renew confidence in party members and stakeholders as well as lay the groundwork ahead of the 2025 presidential election.
Government uncomfortable
Like most of his public outings, Kamto’s Bafoussam visit is sending chills down Yaoundé’s spines.
Security forces have been commissioned by the government from Yaoundé manned major streets in Bafoussam since morning.
Water tanks, armoured cars and riot police could be spotted in different areas, ready for action.
The Bafoussam visit and the crowds recall a similar outing in Douala many months back.
With Kamto pulling crowds everywhere he goes, it is feared another crackdown on he and his supporters by government forces can ensue, landing many more behind bars again.
