The Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) has congratulated the President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, Prof. Maurice Kamto, for jointly winning the Boutros Boutros-Ghali Prize.

The Cameroonian politician and law professor won the award jointly with Professor Yadh Ben Achour of Tunisia.

Maurice Kamto received the prestigious Boutros Boutros-Ghali Prize for his outstanding contribution to international law and peace.
This is recognition for his work in promoting peace, democracy and development.

According to the CDU, Kamto’s victory brings profound national joy.

“In light of this recognition of the remarkable contribution of a compatriot to International Law and his unwavering commitment to Peace—which we share, namely, to make our country a Haven of Peace and a state governed by the rule of law, without which no development or flourishing of the people is possible,” a statement signed by the CDU chairman, Patricia Tomaino Ndam Nyoya, said.

“It is comforting that the fight against arbitrariness and the numerous injustices in the political sphere in our country attracts attention on the international stage,” the statement added.

Who Was Boutros Boutros-Ghali?

He was the first African to hold the position of United Nations Secretary-General, serving between 1992 and 1996.

He was also Secretary-General of La Francophonie between 1997 and 2002.

His career was marked by the defense of peace and development. He died in 2016.

Kamto’s Political Life

Maurice Kamto, a prominent law professor, is also a prominent politician. He was once part of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) party.

Kamto served as Minister Delegate to the Ministry of Justice until 2011, when he left the government and joined the opposition.

He became President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) and contested the 2018 presidential election.

He claimed his victory was stolen and took to the streets several times to protest against the Biya regime.

He was jailed and later released. In 2025, he was barred by the Constitutional Council and the election management body from contesting the presidential election.

Although he left his CRM party to seek a nomination from the MANIDEM Party, he has returned and been re-elected as CRM National President.
