Torrential rains in the Far North Region drown 148 livestock, destroy over 17 houses

The Far North Region has continually been the area to have paid the price for the bad weather experienced throughout the country. Early during the floods, the rains caused significant damages in Kolofata.

The rains returned with intensity on the 9th of July have equally caused havoc amongst the people of the Kouyape locality, one of the villages in the Kolofata district.


According to the Daily newspaper Le Jour, Thursday July 9, 2020 saw the village of Kouyape experience one of the most damaging torrential rains the rains in the area for a long time. To date, the rains have caused the disappearance of 148 sheep and goat.

The rains equally inundated more than 56 houses in the village, of which 17 of the houses were completely destroyed by the rain, rendering the inhabitants homeless.
The damage equally extended beyond that as the heavy rains which were accompanied by heavy winds saw equally the roofs of three classrooms in the village public school swept off.

The Divisional Officer for Kolofata has reacted noting that the damages caused by the heavy downpours throughout the Region are being assessed.

“… This situation concerns several villages in our command unit. We do not currently regret any loss of human lives. The damage is not negligible, we are on the alert” he said.
