The Ministry of Trade says it has subsidized some school materials and other basic products to help parents prepare their children for back to school.
The subsidized school items can be found at mini-promotional fares organized in some cities in the country, including Yaounde and Akwa, Douala.
“This social operation is part of the fight against high prices,” Trade Minister, Luc Magloire Atangana, said.
The mini-promotional sales aim to alleviate the financial burden of parents preparing children for school as the new academic year approaches.
The operation, which began on August 20, will last till Sunday, September 8, one day to the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
Beyond school supplies, the initiative also offers a variety of general consumer products, including meat, fish, plantains and other fresh food items, at more affordable rate.
The Trade Ministry said it is part of measures taken by President Paul Biya to make every Cameroonian live a simple life.
“The operation puts a point of pride in ensuring fair prices, product compliance, and better availability,” said Minister Magloire Mbarga.
According to the Ministry of Trade, the selling of books and textbooks, plus consumer products, at subsidized prices promotes competition and contributes to lower prices.
The government believes it is through this method that people can find school supplies with discounts ranging from FCFA 100 to FCFA 800 per item.
The Minister urged the parents to take advantage of the opportunity.
