Trial of Paul Chouta postponed to April 13th 2020 due to absence in court

Paul Chouta is expected to stand trial at the court of appeal for the centre region on the 13th of April 2020.

The trial of the Web journalist and whistle blower was postponed today Monday March 9th by the court in the absence of the accused.

A source has mentioned that Chouta was not informed of the trial today after waiting impatiently for five months.

Arrested and detained on the 28th of May 2019, Paul Chouta is being accused of defamation and the propagation of fake news against a Cameroonian female writer; Calixth Beyala.

To the complainer, the Web journalist and whistle blower published false and unfounded information against her person.

Since the arrest and detention of Paul Chouta ten months ago, he has not been tried nor granted bail as demanded by his lawyers.

Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and other bodies have condemned Chouta’s arrest and prolonged detention.
