One civilian dead, over 50 injured in Nkambe Youth Day attack

A students has been reported dead and at least 55 others injured following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack that targeted Nkambe in the restive North West Region of Cameroon. The attack took place this morning while hundreds of youths, teachers, officials, and parents were taking part in the 11th February parade.

Victim of the Nkambe attack in the hospital receiving medical care.

Every February 11th is celebrated as National Youth Day in Cameroon. But separatists, who have been fighting for an independent state called Ambazonia since 2016, believe the event should not take place.

They have been imposing ghost towns and school boycotts to pressure the President Biya government in Yaounde to address their plight and declare them an ‘independent’ state.

But not everyone in the English-speaking North West and South West regions where the conflict is unfolding believes in that secession.

Some of them who opted to take part in today’s national event had to pay the ultimate prize.

Patients are receiving treatment in the hospital. MMI could not release all the images due to their sensitive nature.

The majority of the victims are students, women, and children who were taking part in the match pass parade, watching the ceremony, or operating small businesses nearby.

Ben (not his real name), a pastor in Nkambe, told Mimi Mefo Info that some of the victims in the hospital are under severe conditions.

“There are 10 amputations of the lower limbs (legs),” Pastor Ben told MMI. He also gave the names of all the injured and one of the deceased victims.

Authorities in Nkambe have not yet issued a statement following today’s attack. But sources there have blamed Separatists fighters.
