UB Vice Chancellor leads community to plant 2,500 trees on campus

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, Prof Ngomo Horace Manga has launch a campaign to plant some 2,500 trees on the campuses of the state university located in Fako division of the South West region.


The launching exercise which witnessed the heavy turnout the university community as well as other key stakeholders in the region.


The campaign which comes amidst Second Semester Examinations, has been placed under the theme: “Greening of UB Campus”.


In his opening remarks, Prof Ngomo reminded the university community that the benefits of trees to community which cannot be over-emphasized, are multi-dimensional.


“…Trees help in stabilizing the concentration of gases in the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide”.


He added that “we shall use trees in landscaping our campus, especially in consolidating the boundaries of the University of Buea”.


Following his speech, the Vice Chancellor proceeded to plant the first tree next to the central administrative building. The neem tree known scientifically as Azadirachta Indica was the first tree symbolically planted.


While thanking the University community for the massive turn out to witness the take-off of the tree planting exercise, the Vice Chancellor announced that the second phase of the tree planting campaign will take place in August at its Campus B.


He was accompanied in the exercise by the Regional Delegates of Environment and Forestry and Wildlife alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the Registrar, Deans and Directors.


Meanwhile, the different faculties were given portions along the institution’s boundaries to plant trees of various species including: Cassia SP, Emelina abovea, Eucalyptus; Cinderella, etc.


The campaign is being coordinated by Directors of Academic Affairs and Development, Prof Egbe Andrew Enow and Dr Agbor Dieudonne, respectively.

The tree planting campaign launch witnessed heavy presence students of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife of the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.
