UNDP’s Maigari To Allow NW and SW Decide Form of State, if Elected

The presidential candidate of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP), Bello Bouba Maigari, has promised to return Cameroon to a federal form of state if elected in the upcoming election.

But he said the English-speaking North West and South West regions would decide how the kind of federation, as he plans to grant the two regions a special status.

This special status will be the outcome of what he said would be sincere dialogue with the people from these regions to decide the form of state that they want.

But for that to happen, there would be a referendum. Through that, the two English-speaking regions can decide on federation or confederation.

These align with the UNDP candidate’s manifesto of returning to federation, but they have to choose how the federation should be.

Other Promises

While in Limbe on Thursday, September 4, the UNDP presidential candidate also promised to develop and transform Limbe Deep Seaport into a maritime hub for West and Central Africa.

The former Tourism Minister also promised to construct a road that would directly link Limbe to Nigeria.

After the meeting with his party’s militants, Bello Bouba Maigari expressed happiness for what he termed as a memorable welcome accorded to him in Limbe.

Attempts to Disrupt UNDP Rally

Before the rally was finally held in Limbe, it took the intervention of the Senior Divisional Officer for Fako, Viang Mekala.

That was because, in the morning, when the militants were setting up the stage at the Women Empowerment Centre where the event was scheduled, the police came and disrupted it.

They said they were acting on the instructions of the Divisional Officer of Limbe 1, Moni Innocent Nanji.

The DO verbally banned the rally he had earlier authorised in a written note.

That decision delayed activities that were supposed to start at 2 pm.

UNDP militants told MMI that they insisted until the SDO came and reversed the ban.

After his Limbe rally, Bello Bouba Maigari will be in the North West Region this Saturday, where he will also hold another meeting with his militants.

We gathered his goal is to listen to proposals from his party’s grassroots militants and for them to decide how the presidential campaign will be structured.

The presidential election is just five weeks away, and politicians are fine-tuning strategies on how to win incumbent President Paul Biya, who has been in power for 42 years.
