The Director-General of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Audrey Azoulay, has warned that killers of Yaounde-based journalist, Martinez Zogo, mist not go unpunished.

In a release published after the journalist’s mutilated body was found, the UNESCO boss condemned the killing, and called on the Cameroon Government to priorities the safety of journalists in the country.

“I condemn the killing of Martinez Zogo. I welcome the government’s announcement that it is investigating this case, and I call on the authorities not to let this crime go unpunished,” Audrey Azoulay said.

“Journalists play an essential part in nurturing and upholding democratic governance. They deserve every necessary protection,” he added.

UNESCO is among many non-governmental organisations that have condemned the murder of Martinez Zogo and called for the prosecution of his killers.

Several people have been arrested in relation to the crime, including billionaire Jean Pierre Amougou Belinga, who was arrested on Tuesday for his suspected involvement in the crime.

Martinez Zogo was gruesomely killed and his mutilated body dumped on the outskirts of Yaounde on January 22, following his abduction on January 17.
