US-based Separatist leaders plan Protest in Washington DC on Wednesday, remain divided over target and venue

By David Atangana

Former Southern Cameroonian activists and separatist leaders are planning a protest on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at the State Department and venue of the USA-Africa Leadership summit. These leaders belong to the movement of persons clamouring for an independent state called ‘Ambazonia’.

The objectives of the protests are unclear, with some saying it is to challenge the recent indictments by the FBI of some of the separatists living in the USA. Others say the protests are aimed at challenging Cameroonian President, Paul Biya’s visit to the USA.

This move comes after some Former militants of the Ambazonia separatist movement thronged Washington DC with placards welcoming Paul Biya to America.

President Paul Biya arrived in the USA on Sunday, December 12, 2022, ahead of the US-Africa leaders summit to hold from December 13 to 15, 2022 to be chaired by president Joe Biden.

“Ex-separatists welcome you”, one of the placards carrying the image of the Cameroonian head of state read. Other messages stated ‘one Cameroon’ , ‘peace’, and ‘amnesty’.

Leading the repented separatists was Nicolas Nguh Santos, who was formerly Deputy Health Secretary and later Communications Chief under the Sako-led ‘Interim Government’ of Ambazonia.

“It has been a weekend of Politicking. Welcome to USA President Paul Biya”, Santos posted on his social media page.

Massive Calls for Protests

Despite the apparent warm reception accorded to President Biya by his friends and former enemies, things might change on Wednesday as proponents of an independent ‘Ambazonia’ are planning to disrupt his stay in the USA.

Reports say a huge mobilisation effort is underway for an anti-Biya protest at the US-Africa leaders summit venue on Wednesday.

Amongst those behind the planned protest is Chris Anu, one of the self-declared leaders of the separatist movement.

“All roads lead to Washington DC 14 December 2022. Every Ambazonian in USA Atlantic and across the USA are expected to be in DC for the rally,” a message shared on ABS TV, run by Chris Anu, said.

Other separatist leaders have remained mute about the protest call, while some are announcing protests against the FBI at a different location.

The separatist movement operating in diverse ranks has been known for many leadership tussles which have led to them largely fighting against each other.

This is a developing story.
