US Congress urges Biden to Protect Cameroonian Immigrants

In a Congressional Letter signed by 41 US senators, The US Senate has asked Joe Biden to show restraint in his handling of deportation of Cameroonian from the US, given especially the political crisis in the country which has killed thousands and displaced millions.

“We write to you today to request that you issue an immediate 18-month designation of either Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Cameroon, Considering the worsening conditions in the country” they requested.

In the letter, the Congress was particularly critical of former President Donald Trump’s handling of Cameroonian refugees in the US, calling it a shameful mistreatment of the refugees. It should be noted that the Trump administration before it was eventually replaced deported Cameroonian refugees on two separate occasions, despite several calls by the US Congress of the implications these deportees stood to incur upon arrival in Cameroon given that most of them were on political exile.

Quoting official figures from the Human Rights Watch which reveals that more than 3.9 Million people in Cameroon are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, making reference to the Boko Haram Crisis in Far North Region, and especially the Anglophone crisis, the Congressional Letter to Joe Biden pleaded that Cameroonian refugees in the US more than any other needed to be protected from being deported and his given free access to facilities and work permit temporarily at least and not deported.
