Vacancies at NW House of Chiefs as numerous deaths By David Atangana
The North West House of Chiefs May soon be empty as members continue to disappear by design or accident.
As nature continues to call some, the armed conflict in the region is also playing it’s part.
In May 2021,one of it’s pioneer members, Fon Onko Moses Amah, traditional ruler of Nser representing Menchum journeyed home.
He was the first to quit the stage after inauguration of the ‘House’ in January of same year.
Again,in September 2021,HRH Nfor Ibrahim Jabfu,Fon of Nkambe went to meet the ancestors.
The traditional ruler from the Wimbum land represented Donga Mantung at North West House of Chiefs.
His seat is as vacant as those who disappeared in like manner.
As if the cold hands of the ancestors were not enough, the armed conflict in the region has also played a part in reducing the number of members of the North West House of Chiefs.
On December 7th,2021,Fon Yakum Kelvin Shomitang, natural ruler of Bambalang was abducted by elements of ‘The Marines of Bambalang’,a separatist militia commanded by dreaded General No Pity.
His whereabouts have since remained unknown.
He is the Vice President of North West regional Council and president of the regional House of Chiefs.
Last weekend, ancestors again came calling.
On Sunday May 22, 2022 was the turn of the paramount ruler of Mankon.
Fon Fru Angwafo III ‘disappeared.
He was a representative from Mezam and eldest member of the House of Chiefs.
From the look of things, the House of Chiefs May likely be empty given that in the space of two years, at least four of her members have ‘disappeared’.
The second consultative chamber of the North West regional decentralized structure is made up of 20 members.
They were elected in December 2020 for a five-year term.
