The Social Democratic Front (SDF), Cameroon’s leading opposition party, has announced the death of Hon. Peter Cho Fonso, a veteran politician and beloved public servant widely known as P.C. Fonso. He passed away on December 24, 2024, at the age of 90.
In a press release signed by the party’s Secretary General, Njong Donatus, the SDF expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of Cameroon’s most seasoned parliamentarians, whose legacy will be remembered for years to come.
A Lifelong Commitment to Public Service
For 16 years, Hon. Fonso represented the Momo East constituency in the National Assembly with steadfast dedication. He earned a reputation as a tireless advocate for his people, consistently championing issues that mattered most to his constituents. From lack of access to clean water to inadequate electricity supply, Hon. Fonso used his platform to amplify the concerns of the underserved.
His fiery and impassioned speeches in parliament became legendary. Known for his boldness, he never hesitated to call out inefficiencies within the government, often drawing admiration from his supporters and respect from his adversaries. His work left a lasting impact on both Momo and the nation at large, establishing him as a figure of fearless advocacy and democratic ideals.
Overcoming Challenges in Leadership
Hon. Fonso’s journey in politics was not without its trials. In 2013, he faced a significant challenge within the SDF when his alternate Member of Parliament, Ni Amboh, openly contested his leadership. Despite such internal tensions, he remained committed to fostering party unity and adhering to its core principles.
Beyond politics, Hon. Fonso served as a mentor to many young politicians, offering guidance and sharing his wealth of experience. His contributions extended far beyond legislative duties, shaping the next generation of leaders within the SDF and Cameroon as a whole.
An Early Career of Distinction
Long before entering the political arena, Hon. Fonso had already established himself as a trailblazer in education and public administration. Furthermore, as Divisional Inspector of Primary and Nursery Education in Bui, he worked tirelessly to restore order and efficiency to local schools. His efforts earned him widespread admiration and led to his promotion as Provincial Delegate of National Education for the South West Province.
His commitment to excellence later propelled him into the diplomatic sphere, where he served as Cultural Attaché at the Cameroon Embassy in London. In this role, Hon. Fonso showcased Cameroon’s rich cultural heritage to the world, representing his country with grace and distinction.
A Legacy of Integrity and Service
Throughout his career, Hon. Peter Cho Fonso embodied the values of diligence, integrity, and a profound sense of duty. Whether in education, governance, or diplomacy, he left an indelible mark on every institution he served.
The SDF announced his death without disclosing the cause but expressed heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and constituents. “Hon. Fonso’s passing represents a monumental loss, impacting not only the SDF but also Cameroon as a whole,” the statement read.
A Loss Felt Across the Nation
Hon. Fonso’s death marks the end of an era for the SDF and the people of Momo East, where he was deeply respected as both a leader and a community advocate.
