Victims of Ngarbuh massacre should be aware of ongoing preliminary inquiry – lawyer

Suspects indicted in the inquiry into the February 14, 2020 killings in Ngarbuh have been taking turns before an examining magistrate at the Yaoundé Military Tribunal as part of Preliminary Inquiry into the matter.

At least ten children and three women were killed when soldiers stormed Ngarbuh on Valentine’s Day. Although soldiers had initially blamed separatists, an inquiry ordered by the president of the republic indicated that soldiers had misled government in an attempt to conceal their blunders.

Although the majority of the victims are not informed of the commencement of legal proceedings against the accused, the Chambers of the Examining Magistrate received the victims and their lawyers Tuesday 8 June 2020 for interrogations.

“Family relatives of the deceased victims, be it ascendants or descendants should be aware that hearing of their own side of the story is going on. Those whose houses or farms were burnt down in the operation should be aware,” lawyers say.

Sergeant Baba Guida, Commander of the Ntumbaw Joint Regiment as well as Gendarme Sanding Sanding Cyrille and private first class Haranga Gilbert are standing trial at the Yaounde military tribunal for their role in the incident.

Some ten members of the vigilante committee who assisted the servicemen to launch the attack on Ngarbuh 3 are actively being tracked down.
Major Nyiangono Ze Charles Eric, Commander of the 52nd Motorised Infantry Battalion (BIM) is also expected to answer questions.
