Officials of the Northwest Regional Delegation of Basic Education have disclosed that only two literacy centers are currently functional in Bamenda out of the many presents in all the seven divisions of the region on account of the ongoing sociopolitical crisis in the region.
Within the context of this year’s edition of the World Literacy Day, the inspector coordinator for education for the North West revealed that the government has authorized the creation of 30 new literacy centers in the region.
“Practically, it is now in the hands of the councils and the educated, national authorities of the jurisdiction to know which are the schools that can be used as the centers and we know that the resources, logistics will mostly come from the councils with the funds transferred from basic education for such activities”.
The national literacy program in the ministry of basic education seeks to educate pupils and students who have not had the opportunity to go to formal schools. Mostly students and pupils between the age of 8 to 15 years who have dropped out of school and those from 15 years and above who might never have had the opportunity to go to school since the program was instituted in the ministry of basic education in 2012 more and more Cameroonians have been trained on how to read and write. They are equally taught basic ethical values, legal proceedings in Cameroon, and the role of good citizens.
