Leaders across the world have offered tributes to the 39th President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter, who died at the good old age of 100.
The Carter Center, which President Carter founded, announced his death on December 29, 2024. He died at his home in Plains, Georgia.
Tributes poured in from around the world, honoring Carter’s legacy of humanitarian work and global advocacy.
His son, Chip Carter, expressed gratitude to those who celebrated his father’s memory.
He said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”
US Presidents Mourn Jimmy Carter
Outgoing US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden described Carter as “an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.”
They referred to him as “a dear friend” and “a man of principles, faith, and humility.”
“He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.”
President-elect Donald Trump also paid tribute, acknowledging Jimmy Carter’s efforts during a challenging time in US history.
“The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” Trump stated.
Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton honored Carter’s commitment to creating a fairer world.
“Jimmy Carter worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world,” they noted.
They also highlighted his humanitarian, environmental, and diplomatic contributions.
“Guided by faith, President Carter lived to serve others until the very end,” the Clintons wrote.
Former President Barack Obama reflected on Carter’s “decency” and noted his inspirational leadership.
“He taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service,” Obama said.
Republican former President George W. Bush commended Carter’s efforts to elevate the presidency.
“He dignified the office, and his efforts to leave behind a better world didn’t end with the presidency.”
World Leaders React
Presidents of other countries like Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi equally paid tribute to Jimmy Carter.
They highlighted Carter’s role in promoting peace and democracy.
President Emmanuel Macron honored Carter’s commitment to peace and human rights.
“President Carter was a tireless advocate for human rights and a mediator for peace. His legacy will continue to inspire us.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked, “Jimmy Carter’s dedication to humanitarian efforts and his pursuit of global peace have left an indelible mark on the world. We mourn his loss and celebrate his remarkable life.”
Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi acknowledged Carter’s efforts in the Middle East.
“President Carter’s role in brokering peace between Egypt and Israel remains a testament to his dedication to diplomacy and stability in our region,” he said.
President Biden announced that a state funeral would be held in Washington, D.C., to honor Carter’s legacy.
Who was Jimmy Carter?
Carter, a former peanut farmer, naval lieutenant, and governor of Georgia, served as U.S. president from 1977 to 1981.
Though his presidency was marred by economic difficulties and the Iran hostage crisis, he achieved a significant foreign policy triumph by brokering the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel in 1978.
After leaving office, Carter focused on humanitarian work, addressing global inequality and disease.
He co-founded The Elders with Nelson Mandela.
He became the first US president to receive the Nobel Peace Prize post-presidency, accepting it in 2002 for his efforts in promote peace.
Carter’s simple lifestyle and commitment to service resonated with many Americans, reshaping his legacy over time.
He spent his later years in the modest two-bedroom home he lived in before entering politics, declining the lucrative opportunities former presidents often pursued.
Jimmy Carter is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
After 77 years of marriage, his wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November 2023.
