Yaounde patriotic monument entry fee sparks social media debate

The Yaounde city council has imposed a price tag for activities at the Monument Patriote, located at the heart of Yaounde, Capital of Cameroon.

Some of the said activities include: simple visits, taking pictures, or shooting video clips. For every of these activities, a sum ranging from 200 to 20,000 FCFA will be required from those of age zero to adults.

The information was made public through a note by the Communication unit of the Yaounde city council. The note has however caused alot of stir on social media platforms.

Many social media users say the move is meant to be counterproductive, given the nature and location of the monument.

“… It shld be free or Little less than what they are pricing perhaps! From my view this monument was not solely build for money making purposes,” wrote social media user, Lince Williams.

“… Even so,” he went on, “… I hope at the end of each year and account is given on how much it has made and where the money is”.

To Kharl Che, the scheme is meant to rob citizens off their hard-earned monies, despite the ongoing economic hardship: “so with all the taxes collected by the council including the budget alocated and subventions from FEICOM and all other revenue, they built a monument and citizens have to pay to visit. Where on earth does that happen? I mean where did they see it?” he questioned.

He added that the City Council could rather prioritize other needs such as the town’s road infrastructure.

The imposition of the said fee comes less than a month after the monument was inaugurated.

The fee, the council noted, is meant to cater for the structure as well as pay workers that would be employed to keep it secure and functioning.
