Yaounde: Suspected gay suffers mob justice, arrested by police

A man suspected of homosexuality is currently under police custody in Mimboman, Essos, Yaounde.

Inhabitants of Essos neighbourhood alerted the police after the man reportedly scheduled a “blind date” with a fellow man. But the latter decided to expose him, so, he mapped out plans with his friends and relatives to trap him.

The incident took place on Wednesday night at 9:30 PM.

A witness recounted the incident to Mimi Mefo Info saying: “The gay guy (referring to the suspect) texted my brother and told him he was coming to have intercourse with him. My brother did not refuse, he accepted. But when the guy arrived, my brother called me and we decided to teach him a lesson.”

The police were only called to the scene after the crowd had the suspect beaten for hours.

“We got him well beaten after which we called the police. So right now, the guy is in the police cell,” he added.

Homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon. In 2021, a renowned crossdresser, Shakiro was jailed in the country for “attempted homosexuality.”

Cameroon, being a conservative society is not receptive to the LGBTQ community.

“Homosexuality is not good, let’s avoid such. We promise to get you all,” concluded our source.

Human Rights Watch has published series of reports urging the Yaounde regime to relax it’s stringent policies, targeting gay rights and the LGBTQ community.
