Nigerian Afrobeats singer Yemi Alade has made serious allegations about sexism and sexual harassment within the Nigerian music industry. In a recent interview, Alade claimed that she was routinely pressured to have sex with men in exchange for career advancement.

Alade, known for her infectious dance tunes and powerful vocals, is one of Nigeria’s biggest musical exports. Her hit song “Johnny” has been viewed over 128 million times on Youtube, making her the most-viewed Nigerian female artist on the platform. However, Alade alleges that this success hasn’t translated into awards recognition in her home country.

“There was a time in the industry when everyone wanted to sleep with me,” Alade said. “It was like, ‘Yemi, if you don’t do this, you won’t have that.'” She went on to claim that refusing these advances resulted in her being shut out of opportunities and awards shows.

Alade’s comments have sparked outrage and debate online, with many fans voicing their support for the singer. Alade, however, maintains that she has no regrets about her decision. “I’m glad coz I have my dignity, I have my life, I’m making cool cash and above all, I have fans who love me so much,” she said.

Yemi Alade’s allegations are not the first time that sexism and sexual harassment have been made in the Nigerian music industry. Several other female artists have come forward with similar stories, painting a disturbing picture of a culture that exploits women. Alade’s stature as a major star may give her claims more weight and could potentially lead to a reckoning within the Nigerian music scene.
