Atanga Nji Orders Investigation on Aboubakar Ousmane Mey Over Anti-regime Sentiments

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has ordered an investigation into what he described as a “call for insurrection” by political activist, Aboubakar Ousmane Mey, during a political debate program on Equinoxe television.

In a statement released Monday, July 7, Atanga Nji condemned comments made by Ousmane Mey on Equinoxe TV’s popular political program La Vérité en Face, on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

Aboubakar Ousmane Mey, who claims to be a member of the Cameroonian National Alliance party, reportedly stated that his plan to overthrow the Biya regime was “80% XXL implemented”.

He reportedly warned administrative authorities against obstructing his movement.

Atanga Nji says he plans to execute his plans if President Paul Biya is reelected in the 2025 election.

“Faced with the seriousness of the remarks of this unscrupulous individual, who predicts chaos in our country in every media statement if political change does not occur in 2025, the Minister of Territorial Administration has ordered the opening of an investigation under the coordination of the administrative authorities so that he fully assumes responsibility for his multiple calls for insurrection,” Atanga Nji stated.

The Minister said the activist’s remarks were not only defamatory to republican institutions but also posed “serious threats to public order that cannot be tolerated.”

On the same program, Aboubakar Ousmane Mey reportedly accused Minister Atanga Nji of orchestrating a physical attack on a CPDM activist from the ruling party’s Mezam section.

Atanga Nji’s reaction has again highlighted ongoing political tensions in the country as Cameroon approaches presidential election scheduled for October 2025.

The Minister, who has previously drawn criticism for cracking down on media discussions about President Paul Biya’s health and other sensitive issues, insisted that such “reckless and destabilizing statements” will face the full weight of the law.

The Ministry of Territorial Administration has come under fire in the past for encroaching on the roles of the National Communication Council and the Ministry of Communication.

This was particularly after he banned public debate on President Biya’s health last year during the president’s 40-day absence from public view.

Aboubakar Ousmane Mey is the brother of Alamine Ousmane Mey, Cameroon’s Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development.

Their father was reportedly a close aide of former President Ahmadou Ahidjo, and allegedly helped to draft Ahidjo’s resignation speech in 1982.
