1 Human right watch has condemned the arrest of Forgang Nathan, a bilingual teacher arrested and detained in Evebe, Sangmelima, South region of Cameroon. The right organization has called for his release. The teacher who had in jail for close to two weeks now, was apprehended after mentioning the Anglophone crisis and Prof. Maurice Kamto in class.
2 Switzerland had maintained it is playing the role of mediator in the dialogue process it announced in June this year. The Swiss Federal office has said the dialogue Switzerland announced is different from the ongoing national dialogue called by President Paul Biya. Switzerland’s outing comes after some local press, described the Swiss-led negotiation as a farce.
3 Dr. George Ewane has been appointed the official spokesman for national dialogue. He has stated that eight commissions will constitute the team for the national dialogue that runs from the 30th of September to the 4th October 2019. The commissions include justice, education, social cohesion, decentralisation and local governance amongst others.
4 Why the organisation of national dialogue without international bodies? George Ewane spokesman of the national dialogue says while the government appreciate concerns of all countries for peace in Cameroon. He stresses that some of the countries are however giving advice in bad faith.
5 The governor of the Littoral region Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboa has denied allegations that he sidelined anglophones and militants of opposition political parties in the process of compiling a list of people that met the PM for consultation. To him, the consultation room has just 30 seats and could not take all inhabitants of the littoral region. Note that 27 out of 31 people in the delegation from littoral were militants of the CPDM party.
6 Bishops of Bamenda ecclesiastical province have told Prime Minister Dion Ngute that the truth must be spoken for peace to reign in Cameroon. The Bishops in an audience today with the PM said the population of the anglophone regions have suffered for three years.
7 The South West Region has held its last consultation meeting ahead of national dialogue today in Buea. Delegates from Libialem division are calling for a ceasefire before the start of dialogue. To them the process of discussing peace can not be on with bullets still flying in the air in the Anglophone regions.
8 Over five hundred thousand children are abused in the North West region of Cameroon according to statistics given by the Cameroon Baptist Health Service. In a symposium in Yaounde on the theme “Maltreatment of handicap children, from sensitisation to action”, it explained the need to stop the maltreatment of children, most especially those living with physical disabilities.
9 1502 is a free telephone number for Cameroonians to call and report cases of illicit and contraband goods sold anywhere in Cameroon. The Ministry of Trade launched the number today and called on Cameroonians not to misuse the innovation.
10 The brother of Algeria’s former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been jailed for 15 years on charges of conspiring against the state and undermining the military.
Said Bouteflika, who is in his early 60s, rose to fame after his brother suffered a stroke in 2013.
11 The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have introduced their baby son Archie to renowned anti-apartheid campaigner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It is the first time the four-month-old has been seen in public on the couple’s 10-day tour of Africa.
12 More than 900 people were victims of conflict-related sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo over a period of a year, according to the UN. The conflict-ridden eastern part of the country is the most affected. According to the UN’s deputy high commissioner for human rights Kate Gilmore, much of the suffering has come at the hands of the people supposed to protect civilians.
13 It seems not everyone is taking the alleged Ghana coup plot seriously on social media. One Twitter user called for people to “stop mocking the rather serious work” and allow Ghana’s “respected security” to get on with the job. But someone who has changed their Twitter name to #NOcoupInGHANA responded with a photo of a line of items, including kitchen utensils, with the caption “Ghana Coup Challenge”.
14 Three suspects accused of plotting to overthrow the government in Ghana have been charged in court. They were arrested last week and accused of plotting to target the presidency with the aim of taking over government. The ministry of information said several weapons were found during a raid.
15 The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has written to Fifa for an explanation of its missing votes for the Best Fifa Men’s Player award. The EFA says that Pharaohs’ acting coach Shawky Gharib and captain Ahmed Elmohamady placed votes for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah that were not counted. (Source Foreign news: BBC Africa)
16 Cameroon’s new coach Antonio Da Silva Conceicao, has called 26 players to prepare for a match against Tunisia on the 12th of October. Three home-based players have been invited.
