The Assistant Secretary for US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs wrote on twitter: “we welcome the statement of AU Commissioner Moussa Faki Mahamat, encouraging all parties in the conflict in Northwest and Southwest Cameroon to engage in dialogue with a view “to reach a political solution, and put the national interest of the country above all other considerations.”

In an outing last weekend, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission urged “all parties to engage in this path in a spirit of compromise with a view to reach a political solution, should put national interest above any consideration”.

He said the AU has welcomed the initiative of the Government and stakeholders in Cameroon “to resolve, through dialogue, the crisis in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon”.

The Chairperson also reaffirms the African Union’s support for any initiative aimed at peace, stability and national reconciliation in Cameroon while reiterating the Commission’s readiness to contribute to this initiative.

The EU, US and others had earlier backed the Swiss led negotiation which is still at the level of pre-talks.
