Anglophone Crisis:
Pupil shot dead, another injured in military-separatists crossfire

Our news team got her name as Shalanyuy.

The eight-year-old school girl was this Friday afternoon shot dead in Kumbo, a town in the conflict-ridden North West Region of Cameroon.

She was shot dead as soldiers clashed with separatist fighters — close to the Kumbo Cathedral.

Soldiers, reports say, were headed for Tatum, a locality on the outskirts of Kumbo when they were ambushed by separatist fighters along the way.

The soldiers are said to have returned fire, fighting right into the town. “Little Shalanyuy and her peers were attending holiday classes when her life was cut short,” narrated local sources.

Another source said: “she was killed by a millitary stray Bullet today while attending thier holiday classes in STS Kumbo.”

“Others pupils were wounded,” the source said adding that: “they are getting médical attention in a nearby hospital.”

The incident ended classes prematurely for the day, casting a bleak future as to holiday classes at the educational facility and other nearby schools in the town.

This adds to the already precarious situation in the country’s Anglophone regions that has left thousands dead and tens of thousands of kids out of school.

Today’s incident brings to mind the October 24, 2020 massacre in a school in Kumba, South West Region. Gunmen stormed the school, gunning down many kids who ere having classes.

Till date, the perpetrators remain unknown.

Despite the multiple deaths, displacements, arsons and other rights violations, government soldiers and separatists have been unable to reach a compromise.
