Customs Officers in the town of Garoua, in the North Region, have seized a consignment of over 10,000 mobile phones from smugglers.
The mobile devices are believed to have been illegally trafficked into the country. The consignment was intercepted by the Customs Officers while it was being transported to Ngoundéré, in the Adamawa Region by the suspects.
The operation which impounded the goods according to the Guardian Post Newspaper falls within the framework of Customs fight to halt illicit trade dubbed HALLCOMI III.
Motor Jude, the HALLCOMI III, Zone III Commandeer said “the phones were smuggled with other products and when they got to the customs checkpoint, a search in the truck led to the discovery of several cartons and bags of mobile phones with no custom documents…”
He added that the goods have been placed under custom care pending payment of customs duties by the owners of the goods. He also said the goods will be auctioned to the public should they not be paid for and reclaimed.
