Three civilians shot by Ambazonia separatists

At least three people were injured in Mile 3, Nkwen, on Monday June 16, 2025, following a confirmed attack by Ambazonia separatist fighters. The gunmen reportedly emerged and began shooting sporadically in a residential area, causing panic and leaving multiple civilians wounded.

This marks a continuation of violence in the North West Region, where separatist unrest has disrupted daily life for several years.

Graphic Video Shows Young Man Wounded

A young man sustained a gunshot wound to his neck. A video reviewed by MMI shows residents attempting to control the bleeding with their hands as they prepare to transport him to a hospital using a motorcycle. The condition of the young man, as well as the two other victims, remains unknown at this time.

An earlier video shared with MMI showed another victim, a woman, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Eyewitnesses at the time described the scene as chaotic, with community members urging each other to avoid specific routes due to the reported presence of armed men.

Attack Confirmed as Separatist-Linked

Local sources have now confirmed to MMI that armed Ambazonia separatists carried out the attack. The motive for the shooting, however, remains unclear. Regional authorities and security forces have not issued any official statement at the time of publishing. Many believe it was a random spray of bullets intended to instil fear, as Monday felt was a ‘ghost town’ day. Eyewitnesses confirm that all three victims were near their homes when the ambazonia separatists shot them.

Insecurity in the North West Region

The incident underscores the persistent insecurity in Bamenda and surrounding areas, where sporadic violence and civilian casualties have become increasingly common. Ambazonia separatists have been fighting for the independence of Cameroon’s Anglophone regions since 2016, leading to a protracted conflict marked by clashes, displacement, and human rights concerns.

As of Wednesday afternoon, MMI had not received any official updates on the health status of the three individuals wounded in the attack.
