Tension has been building up between the Tikar and Bamoun people of Noun Division of the West Region, after Fon Ngahmon III of Tikar was stripped of his royal attire for addressing the King of the Bamouns as “my son”.
Youths of Magba, where the Tikar people are based, have been ranting since Friday, February 3, after their Fon was desecrated and publicly disgraced by a Bamoun notables.
This happened during a royal visit by the young Sultan Nabil Njoya of the Bamouns to the Tikar royal palace on Friday.
He was well received by the Tikar people with whom they share strong historical and cultural ties.
In the course of his welcome speech, Fon Ngahmon III of Tikar addressed the Bamoun King as “mon fils” (my son), sparking extreme reactions from the Bamoun notables.
A video of what happened showed one of the Bamoun royal guards violently interrupting the Tikar Fon’s speech telling him he had no right to call their king his son, while a Bamoun notable proceeded to removed the Tikar Fon’s garment and royal scarf.
The Bamoun Sultan was then quickly escorted out of the Tikar palace.
Since then, tensions have continued building up between the two ethnic groups.
A video that surfaced showed Tikar women wailing as they moved around Magba with their Fon who had been desecrated.
The Bamoun and Tikar people share the same ancestral lineage. Both of them are said to have originated from Bankim.
