Barrister Agbor Balla has outrightly condemned the killing of the Mayor of Mamfe by separatists on Sunday.
The Human Right Lawyer also called for the protection of civilians who are not involved in the armed conflict in the English-speaking North West and South West regions of the country.
Mayor Ashu Prisley Ojong of Mamfe in Cameroon’s restive South West region was killed as his convoy was attacked and “overpowered by separatists fighters on his way to Eshobi”, a locality in the region, reports say.
Barrister Agbor Balla says killing him was unlawful and a mistake.
“I strongly condemn the killing of Ashu Prisley OJONG; Mayor of Mamfe in Manyu Division, SW Region of Cameroon. The young and dynamic Mayor was killed by fighters of one of the Non State Armed Group, ” Agbor Nkongho said, adding that: “As we mourn the Mayor, we call on all the NSAG’s to respect the Geneva Conventions. Civilians not taking part in active hostilities should not be a target of attacks and must be protected”.
He also explained why an end to the armed conflict which had claimed thousands of lives and displaced over one million is important.
“There is a need to find a long lasting solution to the conflict. These senseless killings must Stop, ” said Agbor Nkongho.
