Gunmen shot and killed Robert, the president of the Batibo Drivers Union, in the early hours of Wednesday, January 8, along the Bamenda-Mbengwi road.
The attack, which occurred between 5:30 and 6 a.m. near Nchualam in the Bamenda II subdivision, left residents traumatised.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that Robert was travelling with three other passengers when their vehicle came under heavy gunfire.
Robert suffered fatal wounds, but the other three occupants survived and continued their journey.
This has raised suspicions about whether the killing was a targeted attack or part of a broader grudge.
No separatist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
However, residents suspect the involvement of non-state armed groups, given the region’s history of unrest and insecurity and the heavy presence of separatist in the area.
Robert was widely regarded as a jovial and philanthropic figure within his community.
Just recently, the drivers union president made a significant donation to a charity organisation.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the Northwest region, where there are wide spread allegations of scores settling amid a separatist armed conflict.
