Few hours after the arrest of music artiste, Blanche Bailly, many have taken to social media to reiterate an end to police brutality especially in the English speaking regions of Cameroon.
Blanche Bailly is one of Cameroon’s most popular urban artistes and has multiple hit songs to her credit. Many have expressed doubts as to how the average citizen is treated, if someone of her status could be brutalized on camera.
The singer streamed her arrest live on Facebook after police officers visited her residence in Buea, South West region. Enraged she had questioned them, the officers went on to use force to take her away as her son wailed.
Her fans and music colleagues have since denounced the arrest, terming it brutal and unjust.
“That was a very very disturbing video to Watch. How Barbaric, people who didn’t even feel any sort of emotion while the little baby was crying. Where did the police carry Blanche to? Please guys share updates and don’t be quite about this” wrote her colleague singer, Askia, adding the hashtag #WhereisBlancheBailly
The reaction of show host and rapper, Nabil Fongod was not any different. “… Someone should be held accountable for the trauma they caused that child,” he said of the artiste’s kid.
Blue Nation singer, Tzy Panchak also raised his voice, decrying the harassment of the singer before her child.
He wrote: “…Free Blanche Bailly
Buea police stop harassing her infront of her child …”
Blanche Bailly’s brutal arrest and without warrant is one of multiple cases of police brutality recorded in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions over the past years. The incidents have multiplied since the start of the Anglophone crisis, with many civilians tagged separatist fighters and exploited by the forces of law and order.
Many other gory incidents have been witnessed including torture and the gunning to death of a 5-year-old girl.
Still, authorities continue to turn a blind eye, ignoring calls for justice.
