Breaking: Ayah Paul Abine summoned by South West gendarmerie boss for ‘unknown’ reasons

Cameroon’s Former Supreme Court Judge, Ayah Paul Abine has received a summons to appear before the Legion Commander of the National Gendarmerie for the South West region, a family member has confirmed.

The summons was delivered to the lawyer, retired judge, politician, and philanthropist on January 12, 2023.

According to the summons signed by the legion commander, Nguele Joseph, Justice Ayah Paul Abine is expected at the gendarmerie office on Friday, January 13, 2023.

No reasons have been advanced for the summon.

In a Facebook post a few minutes ago, the spokesman of the Ayah family and son of Ayah Paul Abine said:

“My Dad, Chief Lord Justice, Barrister AYAH PAUL ABINE, has ONCE AGAIN been SUMMONED, moments ago, to appear at the gendarmerie headquarters of the South West Region, Buea, tomorrow Friday 13, 2023…The summons carries NO MOTIVATE nor does it bear the names of the Complainant.”

Ayah Ayah Abine added that: “Daddy received the ‘CONVOCATION’ on his sick seat moments ago. The Ayah Family will COMMUNICATE on what unfolds tomorrow, IF NECESSARY.”

It should, however, be noted that the retired judge has not been in the good books of the government since the start of the armed conflict in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon.

In January 2017, Ayah Paul Abine was arrested and held in the underground cell of the national gendarmerie headquarters, SED, in Yaounde.

At the time of his arrest, he was serving as deputy Attorney general at the supreme court of Cameroon.

Following a presidential decree, he was released after spending about eight months in detention without trial.

Sent on forced retirement upon regaining freedom, the one-time presidential candidate engaged in humanitarian activities.

Though a one-time member of Parliament under the ruling CPDM party, he is a staunch critic of the regime and an advocate of the peaceful resolution of the armed conflict in Anglophone Cameroon.
