On February 9, 2025, the 3rd Battalion Intervention Rapide (3°BIR) of the Cameroonian military launched a targeted operation against a separatist hideout in Bamessing, Ndop in the Ngoketunjia Divison, North West Region. The objective was to apprehend Ngeh Cyprian, alias “General The Only Bro,” a key figure in the Ambazonia separatist movement. He has been linked to numerous attacks on civilians in the region and operates under the command of Sako Samuel Ikome, a leader based in the United States.
Military Engagement and Outcomes
Reports indicate that as the military approached, approximately eight separatist fighters at the location scattered in different directions to evade capture. In the ensuing confrontation, two separatists were killed, while the rest managed to escape. However, three separatists were arrested by the military. The military reported no casualties on their side.
The operation resulted in the seizure of critical weapons and equipment, including:
- One AK-47 assault rifle
- One FAL rifle
- Two AK-47 magazines
- Three motorcycles, which were later destroyed
- One hand grenade
- A PKM ammunition belt
- Three mobile phones
- A collection of talismans and charms
Additionally, the Cameroonian forces dismantled and destroyed the separatists’ hideout, dealing a logistical blow to their operations in the area.
Ngeh Cyprian’s Criminal Record
Despite the military’s success in dismantling the hideout, Ngeh Cyprian managed to escape. He remains a fugitive and is implicated in several violent crimes. On January 6, 2025, he publicly executed Leo Vishi Newuh in Kedjom Ketinguh. Previously, on June 27, 2024, he carried out the summary executions of two young civilians, Desmond Nyinying and Marcel Awonsang. His continued evasion from justice raises concerns about further attacks on local populations.
Escalating Tensions in the Anglophone Regions
The military’s latest actions highlight the ongoing conflict between government forces and separatist groups in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions. As authorities intensify their efforts to suppress separatist activities, the region remains tense, with civilians caught in the crossfire. Recently, the Fon of Bamessing issued a communique ordering the separatists to leave the village, join the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) centre or they will be banished.
While this latest operation signifies the government’s continued commitment to restoring order in the region, there are persistent calls for them to engage in dialogue with the separatists. However, with separatist leaders like Ngeh Cyprian still at large, the conflict is far from over, and the potential for further violence remains high.
